After the première at the Berlin Staatsoper “Unter den Linden” on 1 June 2001, there was general agreement that the Munich film director Doris Dörrie had passed her first test in opera direction with flying colors. Staged “as a hippie musical” under the motto “To cheat on your partner or not, that is the question,” this Così takes place some time in the 1970s, when the Flower Power revolution was in full swing and hippies were the trendsetters. “The story makes sense in a Seventies context… It was a time of rebellion against outmoded morality. Women burned their bras and wore loose dresses. Conventions were eroded, and those who were brave broke out into freedom.” Asked if she distinguishes between opera and film direction, Dörrie sees the greatest difference “in the constant concentration on the music. That is all that keeps the action going. In other words: restful scenes, no rushing to and fro on stage - almost like a close-up that one can linger upon.” And! , unlike other directors who see the end of the opera as ambiguous and open to interpretation, Doris Dörrie’s view of the situation is quite clear: “They are the couples they were before, but they cannot simply wish away what has happened. None of them knows how long the relationship will last now. The path they take together is no longer so straightforward. Tomorrow everything may be over.”
